Property division not likely an issue in Cuba Gooding Jr. divorce

The actor Cuba Gooding Jr. and his wife of 20 years are calling it quits in their unusually lengthy Hollywood marriage. The actor's wife cited irreconcilable differences as she filed on April 22 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

The pair met in high school, where the fell in love and then married in 1994. Last year, Gooding Jr. spoke about his wife during a television interview, saying that he has loved her during the years they have been together and as their relationship matured. His wife has requested that she and Gooding Jr. share the duties of physical and legal custody of their children. The Los Angeles Times recently reported that Gooding Jr. sold his Pacific Palisades mansion for $9.8 million.

Each state handles property issues differently, but Texas is considered a community property state. If Gooding Jr. and his wife were to divorce here, it would mean that all of the debts and property they accumulated during the course of their marriage would be considered equally owned between them. Twenty years is certainly a long time to acquire assets. As previously mentioned, the house has already been sold, so it would seem fairly easy to divide that amount, but what about more complex issues such as retirement accounts, artwork and other assets?

Divorce is never an easy decision to make. If you are thinking about ending your marriage, you should at least consult with a legal professional who can assist you in determining the best way to preserve your property and assets. You worked hard over the years to acquire certain things that now may have more value to you than your spouse. You should at least see if there are ways in which you can keep them.
