How to choose a divorce lawyer who will be a good fit for you

If you are thinking about divorcing your spouse, you are likely overwhelmed with the emotions and practicalities associated with this decision. For better and for worse, spouses cannot simply decide to go their separate ways. In order to no longer be joined in the eyes of the law, spouses must file for legal separation or divorce.

The divorce process can be a uniquely taxing one. And you will need to employ the services of an experienced family law attorney to help you navigate the legal hurdles that come along with filing for divorce. But how can you be sure that the divorce lawyer you hire will be a good fit for you? Though there is no way to be absolutely sure that you and a potential attorney will work well together, several clues will help to ensure that you choose an attorney who is certainly likely to be a good fit for you and your situation.

First, clarify your goals and values before interviewing potential attorneys. Your attorney cannot help you reach your goals if you do not have a clear sense of what they are. For example, would you like to avoid litigation? Is it important for you to keep your home? What kind of arrangements do you need to make for your kids? If you determine what is and what is not worth fighting for before meeting with a potential attorney, he or she can give you a better sense of how your situation may be approached. If you like his or her style and approach to your situation, this is probably a good sign.

Second, be on the lookout for red flags. If an attorney’s rate is far too steep for you to pay, this is a red flag. If an attorney is rude, insists that he or she may not be able to answer your questions within 48 business hours or otherwise seems unprofessional, this is a red flag. Anything that makes you feel deeply uncomfortable during your interaction should be taken as a sign that you need to interview more candidates.
