Choosing between child rearing and child support

All parents must make decisions based on what they believe is in the best interests of themselves, their families and their children. These decisions are not always easy to make, nor are they always easy to feel sure of once they are made. In addition, many parents feel judgment from others for choosing one path or another. But in the end, only you can know what is best for you, your child and your family.

If you and your child’s other parent have decided to live apart from one another, you need to come to a decision about child custody. For some families, joint custody works best, while in others it works best if one parent has sole or primary custody of the child while the other parent helps to support the child financially. Speaking with an attorney may help you determine what arrangement is best for you.

The important thing to remember when coming to conclusions about your situation is that you can be a loving, involved and supportive parent whether you choose to have primary custody, joint custody or you choose to primarily contribute to your child’s upbringing by means of financial support. No single approach is right for every family. What is critical is that you keep your child’s best interests at heart when deciding what is right for you and what is right for your family.

And if a court will ultimately decide your fate because you and your co-parent cannot agree on arrangements, please understand that you can be an excellent parent no matter what the outcome of your case is, if you only allow yourself to embrace the opportunities you will have in any form to be there for your child.
