Parentage (Paternity) Matters

Experienced Houston, Texas, Paternity Lawyer

At the Houston, Texas, office of Bruce C. Zivley, Attorney at Law, I help parents seeking to establish parentage of their children. Most of those clients are people who were not married at the time of their child's birth. They seek paternity to better allocate the rights and responsibilities associated with being a parent, like paying child support or arranging child custody and visitation.

As an experienced family law attorney, I have achieved a great deal of success in helping individuals with paternity matters. I have been practicing family law for 25 years, and I am board certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Using my in-depth knowledge of Texas paternity law, I can help clients understand how they may be affected either as fathers or mothers in paternity actions.

Establishing Paternity

Texas paternity law may affect different families in different ways. In Texas, the father's name on the birth certificate doesn't establish paternity by itself if the parents aren't married. The court considers other evidence when it is establishing paternity, like the results of paternity testing (DNA testing).

Rights and Responsibilities

Once paternity is established, both parents will be responsible for contributing to the well-being of the child. This can include things like paying child support and health care expenses. The non-custodial parent will have a right to regular visitation with the child, including holiday and weekend visits.
