Child Support: Know Your Rights and Obligations

Whether you are asking the court to order child support or are contesting a child support order, I can help you understand how you may be affected by Texas child support laws.

Child support obligations are established in accordance with Texas's child support guidelines. Child support is calculated using a percentage of your income and the other parent's income.

Higher percentages are used if there are multiple children being supported. However, a lower percentage may be used if children from another relationship are also being supported as well. I can help you understand what you can expect to be ordered.

Non-Payment of Child Support

The court does not tolerate excuses for nonpayment of child support, even if it was not paid because the custodial parent denied visitation. Failure to pay child support can result in serious fines and other penalties and may result in criminal charges being filed against you for being in contempt of the court.

Courts do consider modification of child support orders when the existing order is no longer current, such as when the ordered parent loses a job. It is essential to ask for modification if you can no longer afford your child support payments.
